Shri Shantadurga Goa

Situated 33 kms from Panajim, Shri Shantadurga Temple Goa is dedicated to Goddess Shree Durga who mediated between Shree Vishnu and Shree Shiva and stopped the fierce war going on between the two, that threatened to bring creation to an end. The temple has an impressive idol of Shri Shantadurga in which she is flanked by Vishnu and Shiva on both the sides. This avatar of Shree Jagdamba devi, an incarnation of Durga which had come to make peace or Shanti between Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, came to be known as Shree Shantadurga devi.

The original site of Sri Shantadurga temple is Kardelivana of Quelossim in Mormugao Taluka, where the great poet Krishnadas Shama penned the epic "Sri Krishna Charita" around the 14th century on the lines of Dnyaneshwari. The goddess was shifted to Kavlem during the rule of Portuguese government.

The temple that currently houses the idol was built during between 1713 AD and 1738 AD. Many renovations have been done to the temple over the years to preserves it and to accommodate the growing needs of the pilgrims.
